Weiter so...!

Dear Kevin Fucik,

I don’t know if you remember me, but we have corresponded via email many years ago. At the time I was living in Canberra, ACT (capital city of Australia). Since then, a lot has happened in my life. I have finished up in my job working in Canberra, for the Federal Gov’t of Australia, for the Dept of Defence, where I was a public servant. I worked there for 21 years – all the time employed by the same Gov’t Department. I have mixed feelings about my old job in Canberra, but mostly fond memories of the place, and memories of meeting and growing to meet some bloody excellent people who I met and worked with.

I have my own personal website, here:

http://nav.to/pew (or) http://pewa1.fortunecity.com/

The site has a little bit of everything that I am interested in. The is almost something about every aspect and facet of my life and existence on planet Earth, for 44 years (so far)… and still counting ;-)))

A word of caution… My site can take quite a long time to explore and discover bits and pieces. I am very proud of it… and it is a labour of love (note Australian spelling e.g. like the English spell things). I probably spend far too much time working on it. Such is life… after all… I now live on an Invalidity Pension, and I can afford the luxury of spending my time as I like to. In other words, I am free to please myself how I fill the hours of my days.

On my website, here:

http://pewa1.fortunecity.com/cleanup_windows_article.html

And if you scroll down to the following heading:

Broken Cross Disk Manager (freeware version)

You can see an article which I wrote for Sixteen Bits newsletter of the PC Users Group (ACT) Inc., while I was volunteering to work on the Editorial Team of Sixteen Bits magazine. I have reproduced my article (which is broken into 3 sections) on the general topic of basic hints on “cleaning up Windows OS”. The article on the above URL is in html format. And I have not edited it for some number of years.

The version of Broken Cross CD Manager I refer to is an old version which is freeware. An interesting side note is that may have installed as “adware” with a banner advert inserted into the program window. Quite unintentionally I archived the program with WinZip and 1 x dll which belongs in the Windows\System32\ subdirectory (going only from memory now). When I unzipped the program and dll, it worked fine and quite by accident the advert in the window did not appear. However, the program continue to work fine. As I did not really want the advert window particularly, I was happy.

I have the old version I refer to archived on many of my personal cdroms which I burn.

I also backup the catalogue the program creates, and have a large portion of my cdrom collection catalogued with it. Not all, since some of my cdroms, are very old and I’m not particularly concerned about cataloguing their contents.

I find that the version of your older Broken X CD Manager which I still currently use (freeware) to be very stable and quite simple to use. I did recently (within the last month or so) download the latest available version of your program. I also converted the old catalogue file to the new version with your utility program. I did not feel that I was able to afford to purchase the new version of your program, however, it remains currently installed and is useful even with it’s limited functionality!!!

One comment I would make is, I can appreciate that you have put a lot of work into you program, and your “development history” is fascinating reading – there must be some good (and bad) stories that you could tell, about the development of your software.

I myself am somewhat of an amateur programmer, and the programming language which I prefer to use for Windows 32 Bit versions is Borland’s Delphi 5 Enterprise. I believe that it is an excellent language and have not yet been persuaded to upgrade to a later version of Delphi.

Could you please tell me what is the latest version of your Broken Cross CD Manager program which is still available and not crippled or have features disabled – eg I refer to freeware versions. I believe that at the time of writing my article reviewing your program, both freeware and shareware versions were available. I would prefer to NOT be required to re-catalogue my cd collection… due to the time that this would take.

I have been waffling on for quite a bit, so I shall sign off now.

Fond Regards & Wishing You and All the Staff, and Family and Friends, a very Happy & Prosperous New Year for 2006 and beyond,

pew AKA Pete the Piffle Man

Signing off from Beautiful Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.

Thanks for continuing development of the best cataloging program around. I bought it in the very early days of the program and use it daily.
Many thanks for your devotion to it.

This is the best CD/DVD cataloging program I have found to date. The interaction between the CD, DVD and CDDB make indexing your CD entire collection an absolute breeze! Thanks for the great program.

I downloaded your free version just in time to have it stop working, when Gracenote decided to increase their charges. It would have been thoughtful of you to have posted a clearly visible explanation on your website, so that users faced with Gracenote's cryptic error message could understand what had happened. You know, something like, "Attention: Users of free version ..." This was evidently more trouble than you thought it was worth.
I then tried to register for the professional version, only to be told that my credit card company wouldn't accept the transaction. According to the bank who issued the card, this is nonsense. Furthermore I used that same card successfully for another on-line transaction later that same day. I conclude that the problem was at your end. Nevertheless I entered another credit card (on which I have over $20,000 of available credit.) More than a day has passed since I submitted the information and you have yet to complete the registration. As far as I'm concerned, your software company is aptly named, the operant word being the first. Fortunately there are other music cataloguing applications available. Presumably their authors are more responsive and courteous than you. They could hardly be less so.

Edit by Kevin Fucik: I didn't know Gracenote now stopped their service before you notified me about the problem. And then I immediately added a note about this to the Free Version download.

If you have any trouble with registration please contact ShareIt! with your reference id. They handle the whole registration process for me, including sending of registration key. And they normally work perfectly.

Hallo,
Importieren führt immer zu der Fehlermeldung: This file is in a format that is not supported any longer.
cu, Chris

Kevin Fucik: Mit dem Broken X Database Converter können Sie Ihre alte Datenbank in ein neueres Dateiformat konvertieren.

I was checking to make sure 3.62 was still current when I noticed the Guestbook. Funny how you overllok such things for years... I purchased BXDM in July of 2000. Kevin has responded to every tech support e-mail I have ever sent. I have asked for new features, and over the years he has added every one of them and a whole lot more. I catalog alot of CD's and DVD's and no program is a match for BCDM. I load a 45mb catalog in less then 3 secs on a Pentium 4 2.4ghz ( that's fast). I think it is the best software purchase I have ever made. Thanks for a great program and keep up the nice work Kevin!

Salut!

@Jane Dane: I won't retype my answer here, you solved the problem, as I could see *gg* (my last post that night wasn't sent :()

greets,
lg,
FraGezeichen
